DNA evidence delays sex-assault trial
Manitoba resident Damen Henry Wasicuna-Ledoux, 22, accused of offence in Fredericton
Defence counsel for a Manitoba man accused of a sexual assault in the New Brunswick capital sought Wednesday to postpone the upcoming trial in the case due to newly disclosed DNA evidence.
Damen Henry Wasicuna-Ledoux, 23, of Sioux Valley, Man., near Winnipage, appeared in Fredericton provincial court by telephone Wednesday, while his defence lawyer, Edward Derrah, was on hand in the courtroom in person.
The defendant had previously elected to be tried in provincial court and pleaded not guilty to a June 23, 2024, count of sexual assault against a woman in Fredericton.
