The province’s electric utility is facing charges alleging it failed to follow guidelines to limit asbestos exposure and failed to keep a worker apprised of its presence on a jobsite over the course of 12 years.

New Brunswick Power Corp. made its first appearance in Fredericton provincial court Monday on a trio of charges laid by WorkSafe NB, the province’s workplace-safety watchdog agency, under the Occupational Health and Safety Act.

It’s accused of failing to adopt a Code of Practice for Working with Materials Containing Asbestos in New Brunswick, failing to acquaint an employee with any hazard in connection with the handling of asbestos, and failing to ensure an employee’s health and safety by informing that person of the presence of asbestos at a jobsite.
