An American who shot and killed a highway patrol officer on the side of a rural road almost four decades ago has been granted parole, but he’s likely going to be deported immediately.

Anthony Philip Romeo, 62, originally from New York City, appeared before a Parole Board of Canada panel at Dorchester Penitentiary on Thursday morning for his latest parole hearing.

He’s serving a life sentence for first-degree murder for killing New Brunswick Highway Patrol officer Const. Emmanuel (Manny) Aucoin the morning of March 8, 1987, on Hanwell Road, just south of Fredericton.

Aucoin pulled him over for speeding and was writing Romeo a ticket when the offender shot and killed him.
