City police force expands coverage area
After lengthy transition period, Fredericton police assume responsibility for new additions to capital - such as Pepper Creek, Douglas and McLeod hill - in wake of 2023 amalgamation
Almost two years after several smaller communities were absorbed into Fredericton through amalgamation, members of the city police force will take over policing duties for those areas.
In a news release issued Tuesday, the Fredericton Police Force announced its officers will take over law-enforcement functions for “newly annexed areas” of the capital, effective Dec. 2.
Among the areas affected are Pepper Creek, Douglas, McLeod Hill, Killarney Road and the Capital Region Landfill, it said.
Up to this point, those areas were policed by the RCMP.
“Residents and businesses within these communities will now receive a full range of policing services from the Fredericton Police Force, including emergency response, patrols, investigations and community policing support,” the release said.
Those areas became part of Fredericton on Jan. 1, 2023, in a wave of amalgamations driven by the provincial government’s efforts on local governance reform.
For emergency policing needs, residents in those areas should continue to call 911, the release said, but for non-emergency calls, they should call the city police force at 506-460-2300.
All Fredericton residents, including those in the recently amalgamated areas, can report crimes online at this link, and they can apply for criminal record checks online here.
People can also stop into the police station at 311 Queen St. for inquiries or assistance.
“Although the Fredericton police will now handle everyday policing duties in these neighbourhoods, cooperation with the New Brunswick RCMP will continue through specialized units to ensure public safety,” the release said.

Most of McLeod Hill was amalgamated into the city on August 1, 2018. My property tax rose 50% at that time.
