Counterfeit cash turns up at Florenceville businesses, Western Valley detachment warns
Funny money is turning up at businesses in Florenceville, but no one’s laughing over the counterfeit cash.
The Western Valley region detachment of the RCMP issued a news release Friday about the recent circulation of counterfeit Canadian bills in the Florenceville area.
“On Feb. 26, 2026, a business in Florenceville reported that an employee had inadvertently accepted a counterfeit $100 bill. Responding members attended the scene and seized the bill,” the release said.
“Upon examination, the bill closely resembled genuine Canadian currency in both appearance and texture. The primary indicator of its illegitimacy was the faint wording ‘Prop Money’ printed on the silver security section but is convincing enough that it could easily be passed as real currency if the recipient is not paying close attention.”
The RCMP said counterfeiters often rely on transactions transpiring quickly and victims being distracted, and it encouraged people to take a moment to feel the raised ink or glance at the security window on large bills.
“If something seems off, trust that instinct,” the release said. “Genuine Canadian bills have crisp metallic portraits, don’t peel, and their serial numbers are properly spaced and consistent.”
Those circulating counterfeit currency can be arrested and prosecuted for Criminal Code offences, it said.
The RCMP said businesses that receive a suspicious bill with the suspect still at the scene should call 911.
Anyone who encounters a suspicious bill or who otherwise has information that might help an investigation into counterfeit currency is urged to call the Western Valley RCMP detachment at 506-325-3000.
