Arrest made in Oromocto-area luring case
Welamukotuk First Nation man arrested last week, released on conditions, RCMP reports
A Welamukotuk (Oromocto) First Nation man is set to appear in court in the near future to answer after RCMP investigated a child-luring complaint last week.
“On Aug. 9, 2024, at approximately 4 p.m., members of the Oromocto RCMP received a report of child luring in Oromocto First Nation,” the force’s Oromocto detachment said in a news release Wednesday.
“Early in the investigation, police determined that a 52-year-old man had been in contact with a youth by means of telecommunications with the intent of committing sexual interference.”
Officers found the suspect with a minor under the age of 16 at about 7:15 p.m. that same day, the release said, and they arrested him at the scene.
The suspect was released from custody subject to the conditions of a police undertaking, it said, and he’s set to appear in Fredericton provincial court to answer to a charge or charges..
“Digital evidence was seized at the time of the arrest,” the release said, noting that the New Brunswick RCMP's internet child exploitation (ICE) unit is assisting with the investigation, which is ongoing.
The RCMP took the opportunity to remind parents and guardians to make children aware of the potential risks of being online.
"Parents are encouraged to talk to their children, be aware of the sites they visit, the apps they use, and the people they talk to,” said Oromocto detachment Sgt. Stéphane Esculier.
“There are many resources available to help educate New Brunswickers on internet safety."
