There’s no apparent motive to what officials described as a senseless break-in at the Fredericton Public Library on Monday, noting while there was extensive vandalism, nothing appears to have been taken.

The Fredericton Police Force reported Monday evening that it was investigating a break-in at the library on Carleton Street earlier that same day, reporting that there was damage inside and outside the building.

City officials held a news conference Tuesday afternoon to provide additional details.

Police spokesperson Sonya Gilks reiterated that officers were dispatched to the library at 6:40 a.m.

“They were tipped off by the alarm,” she told reporters Tuesday.

It wasn’t clear if the alarm went off earlier or at the time police were dispatched to the scene, she added.
